CSF of BGM To Participate

In Governor’s Cup Race & Walk for Dollars for Scholars

 

 

Students and adult volunteers from CSF of BGM will participate in the second annual Governors Cup Race and Walk for Dollars for Scholars on Sunday, October 2. The 10k race, 5k run and 5k walk will start and end at Terrace Hill, the historic home of Iowa’s Governor’s at 2300 Grand Avenue in Des Moines. A morning of fun, food and festivities for the entire family will take place on the grounds of Terrace Hill.

 

The focus of the event is to raise money for scholarships for local students and to bring awareness of the need for financial support to help students realize their dream of post-secondary education.  There is a $25 per person participant fee by September 16 this includes an event T-shirt and a Chris Cakes breakfast.  This participant fee can be collected in pledges or donated by the participant.

 

CSF of BGM encourages runners and walkers from the community to be involved in the event to raise money for the local chapter. People making pledges to walkers and runners are making a tax deductible donation towards scholarship support.  The event is fun for the whole family and creates awareness of the need for support for local students seeking post-secondary education.

 

Great Harvest Bread Company will sponsor a Tot Trot for children six years old and under. There will be Pumpkin Painting and other activities for children and adults. Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine will provide adjustments and podiatry information.

 

Governor’s Cup trophies will go to the male and female with the best time in the overall 10k race. The race and a 5k run start at 9 a.m. with Governor Tom Vilsack leading the event. Three medals will be awarded in each of 12 age categories. The 5k walk at 10 a.m. will be led by First Lady Christie Vilsack. The walk is open to wheelchairs.  This year a new category has been added to encourage high school cross country and track teams to participate. Team awards will be available for high school runners. Teams may be co-ed, and the top three runners will score. The team name must be noted on the registration form.

 

The Golden Circle College Fair, sponsored by Iowa Student Loan’s College Planning Center, will be held the afternoon from12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Polk County Convention Complex in Des Moines.  The College Fair draws about 150 colleges and universities that will offer information for high school students and their parents.

 

“Individuals and students of all ages, civic organizations, and businesses that care about the availability of higher education are invited to be part of this second annual statewide fund-raising event,” said Judi Pierick, Executive Director of Iowa Dollars for Scholars. Students from chapters and colleges have been invited to run, walk with their school banners, bring their mascots, wear their chapter/college logo shirts and enjoy the festivities.

 

Colleges have been invited to walk and run with chapter participants, and organizers of the event are requesting scholarship prizes to be used an incentives for Dollars for Scholars chapters with the highest levels of participation. Colleges also have been invited to provide musicians, mascots and entertainment for the event.
